CPSP approved Second Fellowship in Infectious Diseases in 2010 to meet the country’s growing demand for trained Infectious diseases Physician. Pakistan is one of the few resource limited nations that has been unable to eradicate polio, control malaria or dengue and yet we have entered the age of superbugs, XDR TB and are facing concentrated epidemic of HIV/AIDs. Guide to training programs in Microbiology

Microbiology plays a pivotal role in identification and diagnosis of important infectious diseases. Physicians largely depend on microbiologist for diagnosis. Microbiologists have been pioneers and office bearers of IDSP and historically have played an important role in identifying outbreaks with laudable services towards tuberculosis and HIV/AIDs. Infectious disease: Clinical pathological conference

On the last Wednesday of each month, key members of IDSP in Karachi and Lahore meet via teleconferencing. The meeting takes place at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. The meeting generally has two case presentations, essentially clinical dilemmas presented by ID fellows or micro residents. The meeting provides opportunity for fellows, residents and consultants to meet and interact on monthly basis and discuss other important issues pertaining to ID and most importantly reinforces fraternity. External rotations for Infectious Diseases fellows

Currently there are only four institutes approved by the CPSP for ID training. All these institutes offer unique exposure to infections, therefore the supervisors of all four institutes mutually decided to have their fellows rotate amongst all these institutes. From attending HIV/AIDs and tuberculosis specialists clinics at Indus and SACP to dealing with infections in immunocompromised hosts at Shaukat Khanum and SIUT, and then diagnosing and managing complex nosocomial infections at Aga Khan University Hospital.
