Infection Control Symposium at LNH, October 21 & 22, 2008

A two day seminar was organized at Liaquat National Hospital on 21st and 22nd October 2008. It was a joint effort of infection control committee of Liaquat National Hospital and Infectious Disease Society of Pakistan.

Speakers from Liaquat National hospital, Aga Khan Hospital and Indus Hospital participated. After the introduction by Dr. Fatima Noman, Dr. Altaf Ahmed, President of IDSP stressed upon the importance of hand washing in the community and hospitals. He also highlighted the significance of preventive aspects of infection and continuous awareness of infection control, particularly for the doctors.  Dr. Fatima Noman later gave a presentation on standard precautions and its implementations. Dr. Afia Zafar from AKU talked about the NSI. Dr. Syed Arshad from LNH talked about ventilator associated pneumonia, Dr. Seema Irfan from AKU presented various aspects of UTI and Prof Turab Peshori from LNH discussed SSI. Dr. Saleem Hafiz then presented the shields to the speakers of the seminar.

The infection control nurses of LNH, Azra, Shabnum and Shehla gave demonstration of standard precautions, by showing slides and different PPE.

On the second day after the introduction by Dr. Ali Nadeem he talked on hospital acquired infections its causes and various methods to control it. He invited various speakers to talk on different topics. Prof. Mashoor Alam from LNH talked about diarrheal diseases, Dr. Erum Khan from AKU presented her lecture on dengue fever, Dr. Syed Muhammad Irfan from LNH emphasized on hematological aspects of dengue fever and Dr. Sardar Ali presented various aspects of rabies and Dr. Tauqeer commented on dental aspects of infection control.

In the end, CEO of LNH Mr. Hasan Imam Kazmi endorsed the importance of infection control in the hospital and also emphasized on the continuous education of the doctors. He also said that doctors should play an important part in reducing the infection rates in the hospital, by keeping a vigilant eye on any outbreak in the hospital. He later presented shields to the speakers of the seminar and appreciated support of IDSP for organizing this seminar in LNH.
